THE BEST DESIGNED BOOK OF THE YEAR AND THE DISTINGUISHED BOOKS SELECTION IN 2005

The Finnish Book Arts Committee has for the 60th time nominated the best designed books of the previous year. Of the books printed in 2005, 65 publishers submitted to the Finnish Book Arts Committee for evaluation a total of 211 books, 40 of which entered the competition for best book jackets. A total of 17 books from 12 publishers were nominated to the Distinguished Books Selection. Five books received an Honourable Mention for their jackets. In addition, two book series received a Special Mention for successful series design.

The objective of the Finnish Book Arts Committee is to find books that have combined external appearance and content in the best possible manner. The Committee particularly emphasizes the overall mastery of basic graphic design, typography, materials and printing. However, the Committee also finds it important to consider surprising ideas, and to encourage designers to take up fresh and innovative solutions. The Distinguished Books Selection displays Finnish book design at international book fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig. One of the books of the 2004 Distinguished Books Selection, "Kekkonen", published by Otava and written and designed by Matti Hagelberg, was awarded the Bronze Medal in the international competition "Best book design from all over the world 2006." The Finnish Distinguished Books Selection is also displayed annually in Sweden and Estonia.

The graphic design of books published in 2005 was mainly of very high quality.

The nominated books stand out for their careful basic planning, interpretation of the contents and the first-rate use of materials. Furthermore, prepress work and printing were also of very high quality. Many of the nominated books have an appearance and style of international proportions.

However, the final Distinguished Books Selection includes somewhat fewer books than before, as there were some technical defects also in binding and cover foliation. The appearance of some beautiful illustrated works was undermined by the unfinished nature of typography.
